What to do

AI-suggested

Currently, no mitigation that meets Red Hat's criteria for ease of use, deployment, applicability, or stability is available. Users should avoid processing untrusted bzip2 archives with the bzip2recover utility until a fix is released. Monitor Red Hat advisories for updates and apply patches once available.

Description

A denial of service vulnerability exists in the bzip2recover utility of bzip2 due to an off-by-one error causing an out-of-bounds write when processing specially crafted files. This flaw allows a local attacker to crash the application by providing a malicious compressed file. Exploitation requires user interaction with untrusted bzip2 archives. No patch or mitigation meeting Red Hat's criteria is currently available.
