AI-suggested
Red Hat has released updated libkcapi RPMs (version 1.5.1-0.1.hum1) addressing this issue. Users should apply these updates to remediate the vulnerability. Additionally, applications should avoid using one-shot symmetric cipher APIs for inputs larger than 64 KiB when continuous-message semantics are critical. Instead, they should use the streaming interface for large messages or ensure inputs remain below the chunking threshold to prevent IV reuse.
Description
A vulnerability in libkcapi affects one-shot symmetric cipher operations on large inputs (over 64 KiB) in stateful modes like CTR or CBC. The library improperly reuses the Initialization Vector (IV) for each internal data chunk, weakening data confidentiality and potentially affecting data integrity. This issue is addressed in updated Red Hat Hardened Images RPMs including libkcapi version 1.5.1-0.1.hum1. Users are advised to avoid one-shot APIs for large inputs or use the streaming interface to mitigate the risk.
