Description

Redis is an advanced key-value store. It is often referred to as a data-structure server since keys can contain strings, hashes, lists, sets, and sorted sets. For performance, Redis works with an in-memory data set. You can persist it either by dumping the data set to disk every once in a while, or by appending each command to a log. Security Fix(es): * redis: Lua library commands may lead to integer overflow and potential RCE (CVE-2025-46817) * Redis: Redis Lua Use-After-Free may lead to remote code execution (CVE-2025-49844) For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.

Technical Analysis

This advisory covers two vulnerabilities in Redis 6 as packaged for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.8. CVE-2025-46817 is an integer overflow in Lua library commands that could lead to remote code execution. CVE-2025-49844 is a use-after-free vulnerability in Redis Lua that may also result in remote code execution. Both issues affect the redis:6 module and have been fixed in version 6.2.7-1.module+el8.8.0+23580+a818c120.6. The vulnerabilities are tracked under Red Hat advisory RHSA-2025:19399. No CVSS scores are provided in the advisory, but the impact is considered important by Red Hat Product Security.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code remotely on affected systems running Redis 6. This could lead to full compromise of the Redis service and potentially the underlying system. The integer overflow and use-after-free issues specifically target the Lua scripting functionality within Redis, which is commonly used for advanced data processing. No known exploits in the wild have been reported at the time of this advisory.

Mitigation Recommendations

Red Hat has released updated redis:6 packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.8 that address these vulnerabilities. Users should apply the security update to upgrade to redis-6.2.7-1.module+el8.8.0+23580+a818c120.6 or later. Detailed update instructions are available at https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258. Applying this official update fully mitigates the vulnerabilities. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by Red Hat.
