What to do
AI-suggested
Upgrade to c-ares version 1.36.8 or later, which contains fixes for these vulnerabilities. No other mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
This security update for c-ares addresses multiple vulnerabilities including a remotely triggerable use-after-free/double-free in query-completion handling via ares_getaddrinfo() over TCP, a CPU exhaustion denial of service via unbounded DNS name compression pointer chains, and a memory amplification denial of service via unvalidated DNS header record counts. The update upgrades c-ares to version 1.36.8 to fix these issues.
