What to do

AI-suggested

Upgrade to c-ares version 1.36.8 or later, which contains fixes for these vulnerabilities. No other specific mitigations are indicated. Patch status is confirmed by the update to version 1.36.8.

Description

This security update for c-ares addresses multiple vulnerabilities including a remotely triggerable use-after-free/double-free flaw in query-completion handling via ares_getaddrinfo() over TCP, a CPU exhaustion denial of service caused by unbounded DNS name compression pointer chains, and a memory amplification denial of service via unvalidated DNS header record counts. The update upgrades c-ares to version 1.36.8 to fix these issues.
