AI-suggested
A fix is available in setuptools versions 3.1.0_2, 2.2.3, and 0.7.09_1 that normalizes both the on-disk filenames and MANIFEST.in patterns to a canonical Unicode form before matching. Users should upgrade to these fixed versions to prevent exclusion bypass. Until upgrading, maintainers should be aware that MANIFEST.in exclusions are normalization-insensitive on macOS and consider this when managing sensitive files.
Description
A Unicode normalization mismatch in setuptools causes MANIFEST.in exclusion rules to fail on macOS APFS/HFS+ filesystems. When building source distributions, excluded files with non-ASCII names may be included if the on-disk filename is in NFD form but the exclusion pattern is in NFC form, leading to unintended disclosure of files. This affects setuptools versions prior to fixed releases and is particularly relevant for maintainers publishing to PyPI on macOS. The issue is fixed in setuptools versions 3.1.0_2, 2.2.3, and 0.7.09_1.
