AI-suggested
A fix is available in soupsieve version 4.6.2. Users should upgrade to this version or later to remediate the vulnerability. If upgrading is not immediately possible, avoid passing user-controlled CSS selectors to soupsieve or BeautifulSoup's select methods. No other specific mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
Description
A regular expression denial of service (ReDoS) vulnerability exists in soupsieve's CSS selector parsing, specifically in the IDENTIFIER and VALUE sub-patterns. The flaw arises from overlapping quantified character classes causing quadratic backtracking when parsing long, malformed selectors that fail to match. This can cause the interpreter to stall for seconds or minutes depending on input size. The vulnerability is exploitable when user-controlled CSS selectors are passed to soupsieve or BeautifulSoup's select methods. Fixed in soupsieve version 4.6.2.
