SurrealDB before 2.5.0 and before 3.0.0-beta.3 contains a confused deputy privilege escalation vulnerability. (CVE-2026-63763)

Source: GCVE Database

Description

SurrealDB versions before 2.5.0 and before 3.0.0-beta.3 have a confused deputy privilege escalation vulnerability. Unprivileged users with roles such as database editor can create or modify fields containing executable elements like futures, functions, or closures. These elements run with the permissions of the user querying or invoking them, potentially allowing malicious logic to execute with higher privileges. This vulnerability can lead to full privilege escalation, including the creation of a root owner and complete server takeover.

Technical Analysis

SurrealDB before 2.5.0 and before 3.0.0-beta.3 contains a confused deputy vulnerability (CWE-639) where unprivileged users can embed executable logic in database fields. Because this logic executes in the context of the querying user rather than the creator, an attacker can escalate privileges by planting malicious code that runs with elevated permissions when accessed by a higher-privileged user. This can result in full privilege escalation and server compromise.

Potential Impact

An attacker with limited privileges (e.g., database editor) can escalate to full administrative control by exploiting the execution context confusion. This includes the ability to create a root owner account and take over the server, severely compromising the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the database system.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are currently available. Until a patch is released, restrict unprivileged users from creating or modifying fields that can contain executable elements such as futures, functions, or closures, if possible.
