Description

The Tutor LMS WordPress plugin versions before 4.1.1 contain a vulnerability where the plugin does not verify that posts referenced in course content ordering requests belong to a course managed by the requester. This flaw allows users with instructor-level access to reassign the parent of any post on the site, enabling them to take other instructors' course content into their own courses and make arbitrary published content unreachable.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-85571 affects the Tutor LMS WordPress plugin prior to version 4.1.1. The vulnerability arises because the plugin fails to verify ownership of posts named in course content ordering requests. As a result, an authenticated user with instructor privileges can reassign the parent post of any post on the site, effectively hijacking course content from other instructors and disrupting published content visibility.

Potential Impact

An attacker with instructor-level access can manipulate course content by reassigning posts to their own courses, potentially disrupting other instructors' course materials and making some published content inaccessible. This impacts the integrity and availability of course content but does not directly affect confidentiality.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the Tutor LMS WordPress plugin to version 4.1.1 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Since the vulnerability is fixed in 4.1.1, applying this official update will remediate the issue.
