A patch is available in Tornado 6.6 that enforces validation on RedirectHandler substitutions, returning a 400 error if the scheme or host would be altered. Applications should upgrade to Tornado 6.6 or later. As a workaround, modify RedirectHandler URL templates so that substitutions occur only after a fixed prefix ending with '/', or implement custom redirect handlers that validate targets before redirecting.
Description
CVE-2026-116578 is an open redirect vulnerability in Tornado's RedirectHandler that allows attackers to craft URLs causing redirects to arbitrary hosts via protocol-relative URLs or substitutions affecting the scheme or host. This occurs when user-controlled input is substituted into URL templates in a way that influences the redirect target's scheme or host. The issue is fixed in Tornado 6.6, which rejects such substitutions with a 400 error.
