AI-suggested
A patch is available in Tornado version 2.2.2_6 that fixes the vulnerability by properly resolving symlinks using os.path.realpath() during path validation. Users should upgrade to version 2.2.2_6 or later. Until patched, avoid placing or allowing creation of symlinks inside the static directory that point outside it. Applications should sanitize or strip symlinks from user-uploaded content served via StaticFileHandler.
Description
Tornado's StaticFileHandler allows unauthenticated attackers to read arbitrary files via symlinks placed inside the static root directory that point outside it. This path traversal occurs because the handler uses os.path.abspath() which does not resolve symlinks when validating paths, allowing access to sensitive files if symlinks exist or can be created. The vulnerability affects Tornado versions >=2.2.0 and <2.2.2_6 and is fixed in 2.2.2_6.
