A fix is available in Trapster version 1.2.2. Users should upgrade to version 1.2.2 or later to remediate this issue. The vendor advisory confirms the patch availability. No additional mitigation steps are required as the vulnerability is addressed by the official fix.
Description
The Trapster DNS honeypot's decode_labels() function recursively processes DNS compression pointers without cycle detection or depth limits. An attacker can send a single unauthenticated UDP packet with malformed compression pointers that cause unbounded recursion, triggering a RecursionError. This exception escapes handling, aborting packet processing and flooding logs, resulting in a denial of service against the DNS honeypot module. The vulnerability affects versions prior to 1.2.2 and has a medium severity rating (CVSS 5.3).
