In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iavf: fix out-of-bounds writes in iavf_get_ethtool_stats() iavf incorrectly uses real_num_tx_queues for ETH_SS_STATS. Since the value could change in runtime, we should use num_tx_queues instead. Moreover iavf_get_ethtool_stats() uses num_active_queues while iavf_get_sset_count() and iavf_get_stat_strings() use real_num_tx_queues, which triggers out-of-bounds writes when we do "ethtool -L" and "ethtool -S" simultaneously [1]. For example when we change channels from 1 to 8, Thread 3 could be scheduled before Thread 2, and out-of-bounds writes could be triggered in Thread 3: Thread 1 (ethtool -L) Thread 2 (work) Thread 3 (ethtool -S) iavf_set_channels() ... iavf_alloc_queues() -> num_active_queues = 8 iavf_schedule_finish_config() iavf_get_sset_count() real_num_tx_queues: 1 -> buffer for 1 queue iavf_get_ethtool_stats() num_active_queues: 8 -> out-of-bounds! iavf_finish_config() -> real_num_tx_queues = 8 Use immutable num_tx_queues in all related functions to avoid the issue. Technical Summary
The Linux kernel's iavf driver had a vulnerability where out-of-bounds writes occurred in the iavf_get_ethtool_stats() function. This was caused by inconsistent use of real_num_tx_queues and num_active_queues variables, which could change at runtime, leading to memory corruption during concurrent execution of ethtool -L and ethtool -S commands. The flaw was fixed by ensuring consistent use of num_tx_queues instead of real_num_tx_queues. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-31505 and affects multiple versions of the linux-hwe-edge kernel prior to 6.8.0-1064.72~22.04.1 and related versions. The issue has a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8 (high severity) with impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. A patch is available from the vendor, and users should update to the fixed kernel versions.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to out-of-bounds memory writes, resulting in potential system compromise including confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. The CVSS score of 7.8 reflects high severity with local attack vector requiring low privileges and no user interaction. The vulnerability could cause memory corruption when specific ethtool commands are run concurrently, potentially allowing an attacker to escalate privileges or cause denial of service.
Mitigation Recommendations
A vendor-provided patch is available and should be applied promptly. The vulnerability is fixed in Linux kernel versions 6.8.0-1064.72~22.04.1 and later (including related patched versions). Users should update their systems to these or later kernel versions and reboot to apply the fixes. Due to an ABI change, recompilation and reinstallation of third-party kernel modules may be necessary. Follow the vendor advisory instructions for updating and rebuilding kernel modules as needed.
