The remaining work is just like the standard two-part split. ext4_split_extent() will pass the EXT4_EXT_DATA_VALID2 flag when it calls ext4_split_extent_at() for the second time, allowing it to properly handle the split. If the split is successful, it will keep extent from 0 to A as unwritten.

Technical Summary
The Linux kernel ext4 file system had a vulnerability (CVE-2026-45858) involving improper handling of initialized blocks when allocating from or splitting large unwritten extents. Specifically, if the extent needed splitting in the middle and the split operation failed due to temporary lack of space, the kernel would zero out a range incorrectly and mark the entire extent as written, potentially exposing stale data. This flaw could lead to availability issues due to improper extent handling. The vulnerability affects several Linux kernel versions prior to 6.8.0-1061.64~22.04.1 and related builds. The issue has been fixed in updated kernel releases as per Ubuntu security advisories USN-8567-1 and USN-8574-1. The CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, reflecting local attack vector, low complexity, low privileges required, no user interaction, unchanged scope, no confidentiality or integrity impact, but high availability impact.
Potential Impact
This vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or integrity but has a high impact on availability due to improper zeroing and marking of extents in the ext4 file system, which could cause data corruption or system instability. There are no known exploits in the wild. The attack requires local access with low privileges and no user interaction is needed. The vulnerability could cause system disruption but not data leakage or privilege escalation.
Mitigation Recommendations
An official patch is available and has been released by Ubuntu and other Linux distributions. Users should update their Linux kernel to versions 6.8.0-1061.64~22.04.1 or later (or the corresponding fixed versions listed) and reboot the system to apply the fix. Due to an ABI change, recompilation and reinstallation of third-party kernel modules may be required. No additional mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.

Technical Analysis
