UBUNTU-CVE-2026-58210

0
Medium
Published: 07/08/2026 (07/08/2026, 20:16:00 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: nats-server

Description

NATS Server versions prior to 2.14.3 and 2.12.12 contain a vulnerability where an unauthenticated MQTT client can cause the server to retain large incomplete MQTT CONNECT packets, leading to excessive memory consumption. This occurs because the server's parser waits for the full advertised MQTT packet length before authentication completes. The issue has been fixed in versions 2.14.3 and 2.12.12. The vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or integrity but affects availability by causing high memory usage. Several specific Ubuntu package versions of nats-server are affected.

Technical Analysis

NATS Server, a high-performance messaging server for NATS.io, is vulnerable in versions prior to 2.14.3 and 2.12.12 to a denial-of-service condition caused by unauthenticated MQTT clients sending incomplete CONNECT packets. The server retains these large incomplete packets in memory while waiting for the full packet length, leading to excessive memory consumption and potential service disruption. This vulnerability is addressed by fixes in versions 2.14.3 and 2.12.12. The affected Ubuntu package versions include multiple 2.10.x releases and 2.9.19-1build1. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability impacts availability by allowing unauthenticated MQTT clients to cause the server to consume excessive memory resources, potentially leading to denial of service. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity. No known exploitation in the wild has been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade affected NATS Server versions to 2.14.3 or 2.12.12 or later, where the issue is fixed. The affected Ubuntu package versions should be updated to versions that include these fixes. Since this is not a cloud service, remediation requires applying the official patches or upgrades. Patch status is confirmed fixed in the specified versions.
