Medium
Published: 07/08/2026 (07/08/2026, 20:16:00 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: nats-server

Description

NATS Server versions prior to 2.12.8 and 2.11.17 contain a vulnerability where an unauthenticated peer with network access to a leafnode listener with compression enabled can crash the server by sending repeated leafnode INFO protocol messages during the pre-authentication handshake. This denial-of-service issue is fixed in versions 2.12.8 and 2.11.17. The vulnerability affects specific Ubuntu package versions of nats-server. No known exploits are reported in the wild.

Technical Analysis

NATS Server, a messaging system server, has a denial-of-service vulnerability in versions before 2.12.8 and 2.11.17. An unauthenticated attacker with network access to a leafnode listener configured with compression can cause the server to crash by sending repeated leafnode INFO protocol messages before authentication and account setup complete. This issue is resolved in versions 2.12.8 and 2.11.17.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a denial-of-service (server crash) without requiring any privileges or user interaction. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade affected NATS Server installations to version 2.12.8 or 2.11.17 or later where this issue is fixed. No other mitigation or temporary workaround is indicated.
