Source: GCVE Database
Product: nats

Description

NATS Server versions prior to 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16 contain an authorization bypass vulnerability involving wildcard subscription overlaps. Authenticated users could receive messages on subjects that should be denied due to overlapping wildcard subscriptions and deny rules. Queue subscriptions may also improperly affect message delivery to legitimate consumers. This issue has been fixed in versions 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16.

Technical Analysis

NATS Server, a messaging system server, has an authorization bypass vulnerability (CVE-2026-58252) in versions before 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16. The flaw occurs when an authenticated user subscribes to wildcard subjects that overlap with configured wildcard deny rules but are not strict subsets, allowing the user to receive messages on denied subjects. Additionally, queue subscriptions can interfere with message delivery to legitimate queue consumers. The vulnerability is resolved in the specified fixed versions.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user could bypass configured authorization deny rules and receive messages on subjects that should be denied. This could lead to unauthorized access to message data. Queue subscription behavior could also be disrupted, affecting legitimate message consumers. There are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

A patch is available and the issue is fixed in NATS Server versions 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16. Users should upgrade to one of these versions or later to remediate the vulnerability.
