Published: 07/08/2026 (07/08/2026, 20:16:00 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: nats-server

Description

NATS Server versions prior to 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16 contain a vulnerability where an authenticated user could receive messages on subjects they are denied access to due to overlapping wildcard subscriptions and deny rules. Queue subscriptions may also improperly affect message delivery to legitimate consumers. This issue is fixed in versions 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in NATS Server affects versions before 2.14.0, 2.12.7, and 2.11.16. It allows an authenticated user to receive messages on denied subjects when a wildcard subscription overlaps with a configured wildcard deny rule but is not a subset of it. Additionally, queue subscriptions can impact delivery to legitimate queue consumers. This flaw breaks the intended access control enforcement for message subjects. The issue has been resolved in the specified fixed versions.

Potential Impact

An authenticated user may bypass subject-level deny rules and receive messages they should not have access to, potentially exposing sensitive information. The integrity of message delivery to legitimate queue consumers may also be affected, causing unintended message receipt or denial.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade affected NATS Server versions to 2.14.0, 2.12.7, or 2.11.16 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
