Description

pypdf is a pure-python PDF library vulnerable to crafted PDFs with repeated malformed cross-reference streams causing long runtimes during recovery of broken cross-reference table entries. This denial-of-service condition affects versions prior to 6.14.0 and is fixed in version 6.14.0.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in pypdf prior to version 6.14.0 allows an attacker to craft a PDF containing repeated malformed cross-reference streams. When processed, pypdf spends excessive time recovering broken cross-reference table entries, leading to a denial-of-service condition due to long runtimes. This issue is resolved in pypdf version 6.14.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause a denial-of-service by supplying a specially crafted PDF that triggers prolonged processing time in the pypdf library. This may degrade application performance or cause unavailability when parsing such PDFs. There is no indication of code execution or data disclosure.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade pypdf to version 6.14.0 or later, where this issue is fixed. No other mitigation is indicated.
