Technical Analysis

The TLS certificate authentication method in Vault and Vault Enterprise incorrectly validated client certificates if the trusted certificate was a non-CA certificate. This improper validation could be exploited by an attacker to bypass authentication controls by presenting a maliciously crafted certificate. The vulnerability is identified as CVE-2024-2048 and has been addressed with patches released in Vault 1.15.5 and 1.14.10.

Potential Impact

An attacker could bypass authentication mechanisms in Vault by exploiting the improper validation of client certificates when a non-CA certificate is configured as trusted. This could lead to unauthorized access to Vault resources.

Mitigation Recommendations

Apply the official patches by upgrading to Vault version 1.15.5 or 1.14.10 or later. These versions contain the fix for the certificate validation issue. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
