Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-2660 affects Vault and Vault Enterprise TLS certificates authentication method by failing to properly validate OCSP responses when one or more OCSP sources are configured. This could potentially allow improper validation of certificate revocation status. The vulnerability impacts versions from 1.14.0 up to but excluding 1.16.0. Official fixes are available in Vault 1.16.0 and Vault Enterprise 1.16.1, 1.15.7, and 1.14.11.

Potential Impact

Incorrect validation of OCSP responses may allow an attacker to bypass certificate revocation checks during TLS certificate authentication, potentially weakening the security of authentication mechanisms relying on OCSP. However, no known exploits in the wild have been reported, and the severity is assessed as medium.

Mitigation Recommendations

Apply the official patches by upgrading to Vault 1.16.0 or later, or Vault Enterprise 1.16.1, 1.15.7, or 1.14.11 to resolve the OCSP validation issue. Since a patch is available, remediation should be performed promptly to ensure proper OCSP response validation.
