Published: 07/17/2024 (07/17/2024, 07:39:35 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: vault

Description

Vault and Vault Enterprise versions prior to 1.16.3 and between 1.17.0 and 1.17.2 improperly handle requests from unauthorized IP addresses when the TCP listener option proxy_protocol_behavior is set to deny_unauthorized. This causes the Vault API server to shut down and stop responding to HTTP requests, resulting in a denial of service. The issue is fixed in versions 1.15.12, 1.16.6, and 1.17.2.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2024-6468 is a denial of service vulnerability in Vault and Vault Enterprise related to the proxy_protocol_behavior TCP listener option. When set to deny_unauthorized, if a request originates from an IP address not listed in proxy_protocol_authorized_addrs, the Vault API server shuts down and ceases to respond to HTTP requests. Although versions up to 1.17.1 and 1.16.5 were affected, a regression in those versions prevented configuring deny_unauthorized, thus preventing exploitation. The vulnerability is fixed in Vault versions 1.15.12, 1.16.6, and 1.17.2.

Potential Impact

An attacker sending requests from unauthorized IP addresses can cause the Vault API server to shut down, resulting in denial of service and loss of availability for Vault services until the server is restarted or patched.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fix is available and has been released in Vault and Vault Enterprise versions 1.15.12, 1.16.6, and 1.17.2. Users should upgrade to these versions or later to remediate the vulnerability. No other mitigation steps are indicated by the vendor advisory.
