websocket-driver: Resource limit bypass via message compression (CVE-2026-54490)

0
Medium
Published: 07/15/2026 (07/15/2026, 22:08:17 UTC)
Source: GCVE Database
Product: websocket-driver

Description

The websocket-driver library contains a vulnerability in versions prior to 0.7.5 where resource limits can be bypassed when using the permessage-deflate extension. The maximum message size check is incorrectly applied to compressed frame lengths instead of the decompressed message sizes, allowing messages larger than intended to be accepted. This can lead to applications exceeding their resource usage limits. The issue is fixed in version 0.7.5. No workarounds are currently known.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-54490 is a resource limit bypass vulnerability in the websocket-driver library affecting versions before 0.7.5. The flaw arises because the maximum message size validation is performed on compressed frame lengths rather than on the decompressed message sizes when using the permessage-deflate extension. This allows attackers to send messages that decompress to sizes larger than the intended limits, potentially causing excessive resource consumption. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling).

Potential Impact

Applications using vulnerable versions of websocket-driver with the permessage-deflate extension enabled may accept messages larger than their configured resource limits, potentially leading to resource exhaustion or degraded performance. There is no indication of remote code execution or data disclosure from the provided data. No known exploits in the wild have been reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade websocket-driver to version 0.7.5 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. No workarounds are known. Applying the official fix is the recommended mitigation.
