Description

Microsoft announced that Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of support on October 13, 2026. After this date, these editions will no longer receive security or non-security updates, including protections against the latest security threats. Customers are advised to upgrade to Windows 11 version 25H2 to continue receiving updates. Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 11 24H2 remain supported until October 2027. Systems not managed by IT will automatically upgrade to 25H2, with user control over restart timing.

Impact

Devices running Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions will become increasingly vulnerable to security threats after October 13, 2026, due to the cessation of security updates. This increases the risk of exploitation of newly discovered vulnerabilities. Users who do not upgrade to a supported version may face elevated security risks and compliance issues.

Defensive guidance

Users and organizations should upgrade affected devices to Windows 11 version 25H2 to continue receiving security updates and protections. Microsoft manages automatic upgrades for unmanaged devices, allowing users to control restart timing. Enterprise and Education edition users on 24H2 should continue to apply updates until October 2027. No other specific mitigations are indicated.

Summary

Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions will stop receiving monthly security and non-security updates starting October 13, 2026, as per Microsoft's lifecycle policy. This end of support means devices running these editions will no longer get patches for new vulnerabilities or other updates. Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11 25H2, which has been generally available since September 2024. Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 remain under mainstream support until October 2027. Automatic upgrades to 25H2 will occur on unmanaged devices, with user options to delay restarts.
