0 Two security vulnerabilities have been identified in GVFS, the GNOME Desktop Virtual File System layer used in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. The first is a heap-based buffer overflow in the SFTP component (CVE-2026-84268). The second is a race condition in gvfs-admin socket ownership that permits local privilege escalation to root (CVE-2026-88924). Red Hat has issued an important security advisory with updates to address these issues. Join the discussion | GCVE Database | 10/01/2026, 09:22:20 UTC Added: 10/01/2026, 19:26:43 UTC |
A local privilege escalation vulnerability exists in the admin backend of gvfs due to a race condition in the gvfsd-admin daemon. The daemon improperly changes ownership of newly created private D-Bus sockets by following symbolic links in user-controlled directories. An authenticated local attacker can exploit this TOCTOU race condition to change ownership of arbitrary root-owned files, potentially leading to full root privileges.
