A resurgence in Node.js abuse has been observed since February 2026, targeting government departments, technology companies, and hotels. Attackers leverage the legitimate, signed node.exe binary to execute malicious JavaScript payloads, evading signature-based detection. In one intrusion at an Asian technology company, attackers downloaded the official Node.js installer after repeated payload blocks and used it to run an implant communicating with Ethereum blockchain gateways via EtherHiding techniques. The same threat actors compromised a U.S. fintech firm, deploying the Rust-based C2Looper backdoor linked to ransomware operations. Multiple attacks involved ModeloRAT, associated with initial access broker Woodgnat, connected to ransomware families including Qilin, Interlock, Rhysida, Akira, 8Base, Black Basta, and Embargo. Attackers employ ClickFix techniques for initial access and combine living-off-the-land tools with commodity malware. Cruciferra is a sophisticated crypter service utilized by multiple unrelated cybercriminal threat clusters to deliver remote access trojans and infostealers. Written in Mono, it employs extensive defense-evasion capabilities including indirect system calls, API unhooking, BYOVD-based EDR tampering, privilege escalation, and customized Process Ghosting for payload execution. The service features over 90 variations of cryptographic functions to obfuscate data and payloads, complicating static analysis and signature-based detection. Cruciferra was first advertised in fall 2025 with pricing tiers ranging from $450 to $2000 monthly. It has been observed in campaigns delivering various malware families including zgRAT, AgentTesla, AsyncRAT, XLoader, XWorm, Phantom Stealer, Formbook, and Remcos, primarily targeting financial services, healthcare, and government entities through opportunistic email-based attacks. In July 2025, threat actors compromised organizations through SEO poisoning campaigns targeting users searching for legitimate IT management tools. Users downloading trojanized installers for ManageEngine OpManager received Bumblebee malware, granting initial access. The attackers exploited the fact that users executing these IT tools were privileged administrators, enabling rapid lateral movement to domain controllers. They dumped credentials using wbadmin, created backdoor accounts with enterprise admin privileges, and installed RustDesk for persistent access. AdaptixC2 beacons were deployed for command and control. The threat actors conducted extensive reconnaissance, dumped LSASS memory across multiple systems, attempted Veeam credential theft, and exfiltrated data via SFTP using FileZilla. The intrusion culminated in Akira ransomware deployment across both root and child domains within 44 hours, with subsequent re-encryption two days later affecting the child domain. A fraudulent website impersonating Anthropic's Claude AI platform has been distributing a previously undocumented backdoor called Beagle through malvertising campaigns. The attack begins when victims download a fictitious tool named Claude-Pro Relay from claude-pro[.]com, delivered as a 505 MB ZIP archive. The infection chain utilizes DLL sideloading, exploiting a signed G DATA antivirus updater to load malicious code. The technique mirrors PlugX delivery methods but deploys different payloads. Beagle supports eight commands including shell execution, file transfer, and directory listing, communicating with C2 servers using AES encryption. Related samples dating to February 2026 have been identified, with some variants delivering AdaptixC2 framework. Additional domains impersonated security vendors like Trellix, CrowdStrike, and SentinelOne. The infrastructure spans Cloudflare for distribution and Alibaba Cloud for command and control. On March 12, 2026, a sophisticated attack campaign was identified targeting Chinese-speaking individuals using military-themed document lures distributed through a malicious ZIP archive. The operation employed a trojanized SumatraPDF binary as the initial vector to deploy an AdaptixC2 Beacon and Visual Studio Code on victim systems. The shellcode loader demonstrated significant similarities to the TOSHIS loader previously linked to TAOTH campaigns. Attackers established a custom AdaptixC2 Beacon listener utilizing GitHub for command-and-control infrastructure. The staging server infrastructure additionally hosted CobaltStrike Beacon and EntryShell backdoor, both previously associated with this threat group. The campaign infrastructure included multiple compromised domains and IP addresses for malware distribution and C2 communications. AdaptixC2 is an emerging open-source post-exploitation framework rapidly adopted by threat actors in APT attacks and ransomware campaigns. Written in Go and C++, it supports Windows, macOS, and Linux with extensive modularity through Beacon Object Files (BOFs). The framework enables diverse command-and-control channels including HTTP/S, TCP, mTLS, DNS, DoH, and SMB with RC4 encryption throughout. It implements sophisticated evasion techniques targeting both network detection systems and endpoint defenses. Despite advanced obfuscation capabilities, network-level detection remains viable through analysis of distinctive communication patterns, header structures, and behavioral indicators. The framework supports credential harvesting via LSASS dumping, LAPS exploitation, and Kerberos attacks, alongside defense evasion through process injection and lateral movement via WinRM and PsExec. Combined NDR and EDR solutions provide effective multi-layered detection coverage against AdaptixC2 operations across network ... A campaign targeting Russian corporate entities, particularly HR, payroll, and administrative departments, has been uncovered. The attack uses realistic decoy documents themed around employee bonuses and financial policies. The malware ecosystem involves a malicious LNK file leading to an implant dubbed DUPERUNNER, which then loads the AdaptixC2 Beacon to connect to the threat actor's infrastructure. The infection chain begins with a spear-phishing ZIP archive containing PDF-themed LNK files. The DUPERUNNER implant, programmed in C++, performs various functions including downloading and opening decoy PDFs, process enumeration, and shellcode injection. The final stage involves the AdaptixC2 Beacon, which communicates with the command-and-control server. The campaign, tracked as UNG0902, uses multiple malicious infrastructures and is believed to be targeting employees of various organizations. Kaspersky researchers uncovered new malicious operations by the Tomiris threat actor targeting foreign ministries, intergovernmental organizations, and government entities. The attacks, which began in early 2025, show a shift in tactics with increased use of implants leveraging public services like Telegram and Discord as command-and-control servers. The group employs various programming languages including Go, Rust, C/C#/C++, and Python to develop reverse shell tools. Some infections lead to the deployment of open-source post-exploitation frameworks such as Havoc and AdaptixC2. The campaign primarily focuses on Russian-speaking users and entities, with additional targets in Central Asian countries. A malicious npm package named 'https-proxy-utils' was discovered containing a post-install script that downloads and executes the AdaptixC2 post-exploitation framework agent. The package impersonated legitimate utilities and cloned functionality to evade detection. It targets Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms with tailored payload delivery methods. Once installed, the AdaptixC2 agent enables remote access, command execution, and persistence, posing significant risks to affected systems. This incident exemplifies the increasing abuse of open-source software supply chains as attack vectors. No known exploits in the wild have been reported yet, but the threat remains active and multi-platform. The malicious infrastructure is hosted on the domain cloudcenter.top, which serves payloads for different OS architectures. European organizations relying on npm packages for development or deployment are at risk, especially those with mixed OS environments. Mitigation requires vigilant package vetting, monitoring for suspicious post-install scripts, and network controls to block malicious domains.
