In February 2025, BlackBasta ransomware operations ceased after their internal chat logs were leaked online, leading to disbandment. However, former affiliates continued launching attacks using different ransomware families, including the relatively unknown Payouts King group that emerged in April 2025. ThreatLabz has observed continued ransomware activity consistent with former BlackBasta initial access brokers since early 2026, utilizing similar tactics including spam bombing, Microsoft Teams phishing, and Quick Assist abuse. Payouts King implements sophisticated evasion techniques including stack-based string obfuscation, API hashing, and direct system calls to terminate security processes. The ransomware leverages 4,096-bit RSA and 256-bit AES counter mode encryption, selectively encrypting files while targeting security software and employing anti-forensics techniques like shadow copy deletion and event log clearing. Marco Stealer, discovered in June 2025, is an information stealer targeting browser data, cryptocurrency wallets, and sensitive files. It employs anti-analysis techniques, string encryption, and terminates security tools. The malware collects system information, exfiltrates browser data using embedded files, and extracts cryptocurrency wallet data from browser extensions. It also targets popular services and cloud storage. Marco Stealer uses AES-256 encryption for C2 communication over HTTP. Despite recent law enforcement actions against similar threats, information stealers continue to pose significant risks to corporate environments. A detailed analysis of a malicious PDF editor application called AppSuite PDF Editor reveals it to be a sophisticated backdoor. The software, masquerading as a legitimate productivity tool, is distributed through high-ranking websites. Once installed, it creates scheduled tasks and establishes persistence mechanisms. The backdoor communicates with command and control servers, allowing threat actors to execute arbitrary commands, exfiltrate data, and manipulate browser settings. It specifically targets Chromium-based browsers and other applications like Wave browser, Shift browser, and OneLaunch. The malware employs advanced techniques such as AES encryption, custom obfuscation, and event logging to evade detection. The analysis concludes that AppSuite PDF Editor is definitively malicious and should be classified as a trojan horse with backdoor capabilities. UMBRELLA STAND is a sophisticated malware targeting FortiGate 100D series firewalls produced by Fortinet. It contains remote shell execution functionality, configurable beacon frequency, and AES-encrypted C2 communications. The malware uses fake TLS on port 443 to beacon to its C2 server and has the ability to run shell commands. It employs various defense evasion techniques such as hidden folders, generic filenames, and string encryption. UMBRELLA STAND also has persistence mechanisms through reboot hooking and ldpreload. Associated tooling includes BusyBox, nbtscan, tcpdump, and openLDAP. The malware demonstrates operational security considerations and shares similarities with previously reported COATHANGER malware.
