Multiple Cisco products are affected by a vulnerability in the Snort 3 detection engine that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause the Snort 3 Detection Engine to restart, resulting in an interruption of packet inspection.

This vulnerability is due to incomplete error checking when parsing remote procedure call (RPC) data. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted RPC packets through an established connection to be parsed by Snort 3. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause a DoS condition when the Snort 3 Detection Engine unexpectedly restarts.

CVE-2026-20068 is a vulnerability in the Snort 3 detection engine integrated within Cisco Cyber Vision products. The root cause is incomplete error checking during the parsing of remote procedure call (RPC) data. An attacker can exploit this by sending specially crafted RPC packets over an established connection, which triggers an uncaught exception leading to the Snort 3 Detection Engine restarting unexpectedly. This restart interrupts the continuous packet inspection process, effectively causing a denial-of-service (DoS) condition. The vulnerability affects a wide range of Cisco Cyber Vision versions from 3.0.0 through 5.3.2, indicating a long-standing issue across multiple releases. The attack vector is network-based (AV:N), requires no privileges (PR:N), no user interaction (UI:N), and impacts availability (A:L) without affecting confidentiality or integrity. The scope is changed (S:C) because the restart of the detection engine can affect other components relying on it. Although no known exploits are currently reported in the wild, the vulnerability could be leveraged by attackers to degrade network security monitoring capabilities, potentially allowing other malicious activities to go undetected.
