Every uncached /avatar/:hash request spawns a goroutine that refreshes the Gravatar image. If the refresh sits in the 10-slot worker queue longer than three seconds, the handler times out and stops listening for the result, so that goroutine blocks forever trying to send on an unbuffered channel. Sustained traffic with random hashes keeps tripping this timeout, so goroutine count grows linearly, eventually exhausting memory and causing Grafana to crash on some systems.

This vulnerability in Grafana Enterprise 3.0.0 arises from the handling of uncached /avatar/:hash requests. Each such request spawns a goroutine to refresh the Gravatar image. If the refresh operation sits in a limited worker queue longer than three seconds, the handler times out and stops listening for the result, causing the goroutine to block indefinitely while trying to send on an unbuffered channel. Continuous traffic with random hashes triggers repeated timeouts, causing the number of blocked goroutines to increase linearly, leading to memory exhaustion and potential Grafana crashes. The vulnerability affects Grafana instances shipped with Red Hat Ceph Storage, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Red Hat In-Vehicle OS. The CVSS v3.1 score is 7.5 (high severity) with no confidentiality or integrity impact but high availability impact. No known exploits in the wild have been reported. The vendor advisory recommends disabling Gravatar support by setting 'allow_gravatar = false' in the grafana.ini configuration file and restarting the service to mitigate the issue.
