A use-after-free flaw was found in the X.Org X server and Xwayland in FreeCounter(). A client that sets up multiple SyncCounters and awaits on those triggers can trigger a use-after-free when destroying those counters via a second client connection. This may be used to crash the server, or for privilege escalation if the X server runs as root.

This vulnerability involves a use-after-free condition in the FreeCounter() function of the X.Org X server and Xwayland. A client that creates multiple SyncCounters and waits on their triggers can cause a use-after-free when these counters are destroyed via a second client connection. This flaw can lead to a denial of service (server crash) or privilege escalation if the X server runs with root privileges. The issue affects Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 8 (>=8 <8.10) and 10 (>=10 <10.2). Red Hat has issued security advisories RHSA-2026:26562 and RHSA-2026:26566 providing patches that fix this and other related vulnerabilities in the xorg-x11-server and Xwayland components.

CVE-2026-50260: Use After Free in Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

A stack-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the X.Org X server and Xwayland. A mismatch between the X server and the libXfont2 library's maximum font name length can cause a stack buffer overflow during font alias resolution. The server allocates a 256 byte stack buffer but libXfont2's alias target name length is 1024 bytes. A font alias name between 257 and 1023 bytes causes the X server to copy that name into the undersized stack buffer without further checks. This may be used to crash the server, or for privilege escalation if the X server runs as root.

This advisory covers multiple security flaws in the xorg-x11-server-Xwayland component, part of the TigerVNC suite and Red Hat Enterprise Linux distributions. The vulnerabilities include stack buffer overflows caused by unchecked input lengths and indexing, use-after-free bugs in several functions, and out-of-bounds read/write conditions.
