A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's AF_UNIX socket implementation related to SOCKMAP handling has been resolved. The issue involves inflight file descriptors being hidden from garbage collection, leading to resource leaks and a use-after-free condition. Additionally, incorrect file descriptor counts could be reported due to improper handling of SCM attributes. This vulnerability has been assigned CVE-2026-53005 and affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 7.0.0-28.28 and related builds. A patch is available to drop all SCM attributes before passing skb to the SOCKMAP layer, mitigating the issue.

CVE-2026-53005 addresses a flaw in the Linux kernel's AF_UNIX socket subsystem where SOCKMAP can hide inflight file descriptors from the AF_UNIX garbage collector. When a socket in SOCKMAP receives an skb containing inflight file descriptors, the kernel's sk_psock_verdict_data_ready() function enqueues the skb to the psock ingress queue, which is not inspected by garbage collection, causing leaks of inflight sockets. This also breaks the Tarjan-based garbage collector's assumption that unix_edge.successor is always alive, resulting in a use-after-free vulnerability. Furthermore, SOCKMAP does not properly call scm_stat_del(), causing unix_show_fdinfo() to report incorrect file descriptor counts. The fix involves dropping all SCM attributes before skb is passed to the SOCKMAP layer.
