In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: af_unix: Drop all SCM attributes for SOCKMAP. SOCKMAP can hide inflight fd from AF_UNIX GC. When a socket in SOCKMAP receives skb with inflight fd, sk_psock_verdict_data_ready() looks up the mapped socket and enqueue skb to its psock->ingress_skb. Since neither the old nor the new GC can inspect the psock queue, the hidden skb leaks the inflight sockets. Note that this cannot be detected via kmemleak because inflight sockets are linked to a global list. In addition, SOCKMAP redirect breaks the Tarjan-based GC's assumption that unix_edge.successor is always alive, which is no longer true once skb is redirected, resulting in use-after-free below. [0] Moreover, SOCKMAP does not call scm_stat_del() properly, so unix_show_fdinfo() could report an incorrect fd count. sk_msg_recvmsg() does not support any SCM attributes in the first place. Let's drop all SCM attributes before passing skb to the SOCKMAP layer. Technical Summary
The Linux kernel vulnerability affects the AF_UNIX socket implementation where SOCKMAP can hide inflight file descriptors from the AF_UNIX garbage collector (GC). When a socket in SOCKMAP receives skb with inflight file descriptors, the skb is enqueued to a psock ingress queue that the GC cannot inspect, leading to socket leaks. Additionally, SOCKMAP redirection breaks the GC's assumption that unix_edge.successor is always alive, causing a use-after-free error. SOCKMAP also fails to properly call scm_stat_del(), resulting in incorrect file descriptor counts reported by unix_show_fdinfo(). The kernel function sk_msg_recvmsg() does not support SCM attributes, so the fix drops all SCM attributes before skb is passed to SOCKMAP. This vulnerability was identified with KASAN reports of slab-use-after-free in unix_del_edges and has been resolved in Linux kernel versions 7.0.0-28.28.1 and later.
Potential Impact
This vulnerability can cause inflight sockets to leak due to the AF_UNIX garbage collector being unable to inspect certain socket buffers, leading to resource exhaustion. The use-after-free condition can cause memory corruption, potentially leading to system instability or crashes. Incorrect file descriptor counts may mislead system monitoring tools. The CVSS vector indicates local attack complexity with low privileges required and no user interaction, with high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Mitigation Recommendations
A fix is available in Linux kernel versions 7.0.0-28.28.1 and later, which drops all SCM attributes before passing skb to the SOCKMAP layer, preventing socket leaks and use-after-free conditions. Users should update affected Linux kernel versions to 7.0.0-28.28.1 or newer to remediate this vulnerability. No additional mitigations are specified or required beyond applying the official fix.
