It occurs because an attacker-controlled attachment name is written into an HTML status block without proper escaping, allowing script injection. This vulnerability affects versions prior to 7.2.0, where the issue is fixed by escaping the value with htmlspecialchars(). Exploitation requires only the ability to send mail to a user, no account is needed. The vulnerability can persist in the mailbox and has been chained with another flaw for potential code execution in an administrator's session.
