A sophisticated spam campaign exploited Atlassian Jira Cloud to bypass security controls and target government and corporate entities. The attackers used legitimate Atlassian Cloud infrastructure to create disposable Jira instances, leveraging the platform's trusted domain reputation. The campaign targeted specific language groups, including English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian speakers, with tailored emails redirecting to investment scams and online casinos. The operation demonstrated high automation and abuse of SaaS workflows, highlighting the need for reassessing trust assumptions in cloud-generated emails. The campaign utilized Keitaro Traffic Distribution System for redirects and focused on organizations already using Atlassian Jira, exploiting their familiarity with Jira-related emails.
During the holiday season, threat actors exploit overloaded inboxes and financial stress through two main patterns: Docusign-themed phishing for corporate credential harvesting and loan offer spam for personal data theft. The Docusign campaign uses spoofed emails with authentic-looking branding, redirecting through disposable hosting platforms to a credential harvesting page. The loan scams range from obvious 'Xmas loan' offers to sophisticated marketing-style emails, ultimately leading victims to a detailed identity theft questionnaire on christmasscheercash.com. Both scams utilize seasonal themes and mimic normal end-of-year workflows to increase effectiveness. Defensive measures include verifying sender domains, validating link destinations, and treating unsolicited loan offers as high risk.
A Chinese-nexus advanced persistent threat actor, UAT-9686, is actively targeting Cisco AsyncOS Software for Secure Email Gateway and Secure Email and Web Manager. The campaign, ongoing since late November 2025, exploits non-standard configurations to execute system-level commands and deploy a persistent Python-based backdoor called AquaShell. Additional tools observed include AquaTunnel for reverse SSH tunneling, chisel for TCP/UDP tunneling, and AquaPurge for log clearing. The attackers can execute encoded commands in the system shell and create reverse connections to attacker-controlled servers. This sophisticated attack aligns with tactics used by other Chinese APT groups, raising concerns about potential widespread impact on email security infrastructure.
Threat actors are actively exploiting Microsoft 365's Direct Send feature to deliver phishing emails, bypassing perimeter security solutions by routing malicious messages through trusted infrastructure. This technique requires no credentials, only knowledge of the target domain and valid recipient addresses. The attack process involves identifying organizational domains, crafting emails impersonating internal users, and delivering them through Microsoft 365's infrastructure. Recent campaigns have successfully harvested credentials and established footholds within targeted environments. Attackers use automated tools to generate convincing business-themed lures, often utilizing PDF and DOCX attachments with QR codes or obfuscated HTML leading to phishing pages. The abuse of Direct Send represents a critical gap in email security defenses, particularly for organizations relying heavily on email communications.
Homograph attacks involve using non-Latin characters that visually resemble Latin characters to create words that appear legitimate but are actually different. This technique allows attackers to evade detection and analysis, crafting malicious emails that can lead to credential theft or malware infection. The article examines three real-world cases of homograph attacks used in phishing attempts, including impersonation of well-known brands and document-sharing platforms. These attacks exploit visual similarities to deceive users, bypass security filters, and impersonate trusted entities. The rise of AI-driven phishing makes this vector even more dangerous. To protect against homograph attacks, it's crucial to carefully examine sender addresses, be wary of unknown senders, and avoid engaging with suspicious attachments or URLs.
A new phishing campaign has been observed leveraging a .gov domain to deceive employees into believing they owe an unpaid toll. The scam uses urgency and fear tactics, threatening penalties or vehicle registration holds if the balance is not paid immediately. The threat actors utilize the GovDelivery system to increase legitimacy, despite using Indiana's instance for a Texas-related scam. The phishing link leads to a fake website that collects personal information and credit card details. The campaign exploits fear of consequences and mimics a well-known service, highlighting the importance of integrating human expertise into email security processes to identify threats that bypass conventional malicious indicators.
