Threat actors are targeting the accommodation industry with email campaigns containing fake guest complaints and inquiries. These emails deliver malicious LNK shortcut files disguised as images, which deploy blockchain-abusing malware families EtherRAT and TONResolver. These malware variants use public blockchain APIs for command and control infrastructure resolution, enabling dynamic infrastructure rotation and evasion of traditional takedown methods. The campaigns evolve from earlier Booking.com spoofing operations and likely use generative AI to create unique email variants, complicating detection. Blackpoint's Adversary Pursuit Group identified ChainScript, a previously unnamed Node.js remote access trojan discovered during ClickFix investigation. The malware disguises itself as legitimate software including Spotify, Zoom Workplace, and Microsoft Teams through malicious Windows Installer packages. ChainScript employs an EtherHiding-style C2 discovery technique utilizing a Polygon smart contract to dynamically locate active WebSocket infrastructure, enabling operators to rotate backend services without rebuilding agents. The RAT provides comprehensive remote access capabilities including interactive shell sessions, file operations, screenshots, payload deployment, cryptocurrency wallet discovery, remote JavaScript execution, self-update mechanisms, and cleanup functions. Multiple builds appeared under different names (ComponentTask33, UpdateDigital, HostShared, OrchidViolet66) while maintaining consistent core agent architecture. Analysis revealed automated contract deployment integrated into the mal... Join the discussion | AlienVault OTX General | 09/18/2026, 21:49:13 UTC Added: 09/21/2026, 08:46:37 UTC |
Since February 2026, there has been a resurgence of attacks abusing Node.js, targeting government, technology, and hospitality sectors. Attackers use the legitimate, signed node.exe binary to execute malicious JavaScript payloads, bypassing signature-based detection. Notable incidents include compromises of an Asian technology company and a U.S. fintech firm, involving advanced techniques such as EtherHiding and deployment of Rust-based backdoors linked to ransomware operations. Multiple attacks involve ModeloRAT, associated with initial access broker Woodgnat, connected to various ransomware families. Attackers combine living-off-the-land tactics with commodity malware and employ ClickFix techniques for initial access. An exposed open directory at a staging server revealed an active intrusion by operators linked to The Gentlemen ransomware group. The operation involved establishing persistent access through privileged account creation, credential theft via LSASS dumping, and lateral movement across a Windows domain. Attackers deployed multiple implants including EtherRAT, which retrieves command-and-control domains from an Ethereum smart contract, alongside Sliver and custom Go reverse shells. Lateral movement was achieved through remote scheduled tasks distributing MSI payloads, while security products were disabled and reverse tunnels established for persistent access. The infrastructure and tactics align with previously documented The Gentlemen campaigns, including a ClickFix operation deploying EtherRAT. A ClickFix social engineering attack on an unmonitored endpoint led to a multi-stage intrusion affecting over 11 hosts. The infection chain began with a malicious HTA payload that silently installed an MSI package containing Potemkin, a custom loader with a deterministic DGA. Potemkin delivered RMMProject, a 4.4 MB Lua-scriptable RAT featuring browser credential theft with Chrome App-Bound Encryption bypass, hidden-desktop remote control, and 15 distinct task types. The attacker deployed EtherRAT, a Node.js backdoor resolving C2 addresses from Ethereum blockchain, and established a Cloudflare tunnel for persistent access. Hands-on-keyboard activity included battling Windows Defender through AMSI patches, registry modifications, and service termination, followed by lateral movement via WMIExec and SMBExec to deploy malware across the network and reach the domain controller. Cybercriminals are merging traditional malware operations with cryptocurrency-focused attacks, creating hybrid threat ecosystems. Modern crypto drainers have evolved into automated systems capable of extracting assets across multiple blockchains with minimal user interaction, supported by well-developed underground marketplaces offering drainer-as-a-service kits. Two case studies exemplify this convergence: StepDrainer operates as a multichain drainer-as-a-service platform that abuses Web3Modal and smart contract methods across over 20 blockchain networks, using AI-themed lures and polished interfaces to deceive victims into connecting wallets. EtherRAT represents a hybrid Windows implant delivered through trojanized TFTP installers, combining traditional RAT capabilities with blockchain-aware functionality including Ethereum RPC endpoints and embedded wallet addresses. Both threats demonstrate how cryptocurrency theft infrastructure now intersects with mainstream attack surfaces affecting enterprise envir... EtherRAT, a Node.js-based backdoor linked to a North Korean APT group, was detected in a retail customer's environment. It allows arbitrary command execution, extensive system information gathering, and asset theft. The malware uses 'EtherHiding' to store C2 addresses in Ethereum smart contracts, making infrastructure resilient to takedowns. It communicates using CDN-like beaconing to blend with normal traffic. Initial access varied, including ClickFix and IT Support scams via Microsoft Teams. A SYS_INFO module performs comprehensive host fingerprinting for target selection. The malware checks for CIS languages and self-destructs if found. It collects detailed system information, including hardware, software, and network details. 0 CVE-2025-55182, also known as React2Shell, is a critical pre-authentication remote code execution vulnerability affecting React Server Components and related frameworks. With a CVSS score of 10.0, it allows attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable servers through a single malicious HTTP request. Exploitation has been detected since December 5, 2025, primarily in red team assessments but also in real-world attacks delivering coin miners. The vulnerability stems from a failure to validate incoming payloads in React Server Components, enabling attackers to inject malicious structures leading to prototype pollution and remote code execution. Post-exploitation activities include running reverse shells, achieving persistence, evading security defenses, and attempting lateral movement to cloud resources.
