Ink Dragon, a Chinese threat actor, is conducting a sophisticated espionage campaign targeting government entities in Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America. The group exploits IIS misconfigurations to gain initial access and deploys a custom ShadowPad IIS Listener module to create a victim-based relay network, turning compromised servers into nodes of a distributed mesh. They use a new variant of the FinalDraft malware and platform-native tools to maintain stealth and blend into normal enterprise telemetry. Their operations are characterized by disciplined playbooks and advanced software engineering, enabling persistent and covert intrusions. The campaign poses a medium severity threat due to its targeted nature and stealth capabilities, with no known public exploits yet. European organizations, especially government sectors running IIS servers with potential misconfigurations, are at risk. The threat actor’s relay network complicates detection and response efforts, increasing the potential impact on confidentiality and operational integrity. Mitigation requires focused IIS hardening, network segmentation, and advanced telemetry analysis to detect anomalous relay behaviors.

NANOREMOTE is a newly identified Windows backdoor malware closely related to the previously known FINALDRAFT malware family. It uniquely leverages the Google Drive API for stealthy data exfiltration and payload staging, complicating detection efforts. The malware communicates with a hardcoded IP over HTTP using encrypted and compressed JSON data and supports 22 command handlers for system reconnaissance, file operations, and command execution. Its modular design includes a task management system for file transfers and incorporates open-source components. NANOREMOTE’s similarity to FINALDRAFT indicates a shared codebase and development environment, suggesting ongoing evolution of this threat. Although no known exploits are reported in the wild yet, its capabilities pose a medium risk. Detection is challenging due to its use of legitimate cloud services for malicious activity. European organizations should be vigilant, especially those with Windows environments and reliance on Google Drive services.

A Chinese APT group named Jewelbug has expanded its operations to target organizations in South America, South Asia, Taiwan, and Russia. The group's recent intrusion into a Russian IT service provider lasted for five months in 2025, potentially aiming for a supply chain attack. Jewelbug has deployed new backdoors, including one leveraging Microsoft Graph API and OneDrive for command and control. The group's tactics include using legitimate tools, DLL sideloading, and the bring-your-own-vulnerable-driver technique. Notably, Jewelbug's targeting of Russian organizations marks a shift in Chinese cyber operations, previously considered to be allied with Russia.
