A flaw was found in gnutls. When validating certificates, an oversized Subject Alternative Name (SAN) could cause the validation process to incorrectly fall back to checking the Common Name (CN) field. This could allow a remote attacker to bypass proper certificate validation, potentially leading to spoofing or man-in-the-middle attacks.

The vulnerability in GnuTLS involves improper certificate validation due to handling of an oversized Subject Alternative Name (SAN). When the SAN is oversized, the validation process erroneously falls back to checking the Common Name (CN) field, which can be exploited by remote attackers to bypass certificate validation. This can lead to spoofing or man-in-the-middle attacks by deceiving the client into trusting a malicious certificate. The issue is tracked as CVE-2026-42013 with a CVSS v3.1 score of 8.2 (high). Red Hat has issued a security advisory and released patched packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Extended Lifecycle Support to mitigate this vulnerability.
