CVE-2024-42224 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's mv88e6xxx driver related to incorrect checking of an empty list. The issue involves improper use of list_first_entry() which does not return NULL for empty lists, potentially leading to incorrect behavior. The fix replaces this with list_first_entry_or_null(), which correctly returns NULL if the list is empty. This vulnerability was identified by static analysis (Smatch) and has been compile tested.
