CVE-2024-42145 addresses a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's IB/core subsystem where the UMAD receive list could grow without bound, risking resource exhaustion. The flaw arises because the list of received MAD packets is unbounded, and if user-space applications do not extract packets as fast as they arrive, the list can overflow. The fix introduces a limit of 200,000 packets on the list size, dropping packets beyond this threshold to prevent uncontrolled growth. This mitigates the risk of denial-of-service conditions caused by resource exhaustion in the kernel.
