CVE-2024-40970 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's dw-axi-dmac driver where an array overrun of the hw_desc array can occur. This happens when the number of buffers and segments per descriptor cause the DMA channel's descriptor allocation count to be mismanaged, leading to a kernel panic. The issue is fixed by adding a member to track the number of allocated hardware descriptors and adjusting handling accordingly. Additionally, a call causing unbalanced descriptor starts was removed to prevent transfer interruptions.
