CVE-2024-42077 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's OCFS2 filesystem driver where direct IO (DIO) writes can fail due to insufficient transaction credits. This occurs because the code underestimates the number of transaction credits needed when handling IO operations with many single-block extents, leading to exhaustion of credits and triggering a kernel panic. The issue affects heavily fragmented OCFS2 filesystems and results in system instability and crashes.
