A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's CIFS implementation was resolved by ensuring the function pagecache_isize_extended() is called in cifs_setsize() when extending file size. The flaw involved skipping this call, which is necessary to zero out the tail of the page straddling the old end-of-file, potentially causing stale data to be written back to the server in the newly extended file range.
