CVE-2024-56589 is a medium severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's hisi_sas SCSI driver. It occurs in no forced preemption model kernels when an expander is connected to multiple high-performance SAS SSDs, causing a CPU soft lockup due to continuous CPU consumption and watchdog timeout. The issue arises because both the hardware interrupt handler and interrupt thread run on the same CPU, preventing the watchdog thread from running. The fix involves adding a cond_resched() call to allow the watchdog thread to execute properly.
