CVE-2024-42253 is a race condition vulnerability in the Linux kernel's gpio driver for pca953x devices. The issue occurs due to the lack of proper locking (i2c_lock) when setting interrupt latch and mask in the pca953x_irq_bus_sync_unlock() function. This race can cause incorrect register writes, potentially leading to system instability or denial of service. The vulnerability was observed on i.MX8MP based systems with a low frequency of occurrence (about once per thousand reboots).
