A race condition vulnerability in the Linux kernel's network subsystem was resolved, involving the netif_running() check in enqueue_to_backlog(). The flaw allowed packets to bypass backlog flushing during device unregistration, leading to a use-after-free (UAF) condition. The issue was caused by a time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) race window due to a lockless check. The fix serializes the netif_running() check with the backlog lock to prevent packets from escaping flushing or being queued after device closure.
