The issue arises because the software filter does not validate branch-from addresses originating in the kernel, exposing kernel addresses even when user-only branch stack sampling is requested. This has been resolved by extending the software filter to drop branch records whose branch-from address is in the kernel when PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_USER is requested.
