A 710 KB JavaScript payload was discovered in the compromised [email protected] package, representing a newer variant of Shai-Hulud with enhanced obfuscation techniques. The malicious code operates with four primary objectives: harvesting credentials from local systems, CI environments, cloud platforms, Kubernetes, and Vault; exfiltrating encrypted data through dynamic HTTPS endpoints or public GitHub repositories; leveraging stolen npm credentials to publish infected patch releases across accessible packages; and exploiting GitHub credentials with GitHub Actions to compromise repositories and extract additional credentials. The campaign demonstrates sophisticated supply chain attack capabilities, targeting the npm ecosystem and development infrastructure. Multiple components were identified including obfuscated JavaScript files, VS Code configuration files, and injected GitHub Actions workflows, indicating a comprehensive approach to credential theft and lateral movement across development environments.

A supply chain attack has compromised the node-ipc npm package, with malicious versions 9.1.6, 9.2.3, and 12.0.1 containing obfuscated stealer and backdoor functionality. The attack vector involved takeover of a dormant maintainer account through an expired email domain. The malware fingerprints host environments, enumerates and reads local files including SSH keys, cloud credentials, database configurations, and various developer secrets. Collected data is compressed into a gzip archive and exfiltrated via DNS TXT queries to attacker-controlled infrastructure disguised as legitimate Azure domains. The payload targets over 100 file patterns across macOS and Linux systems, focusing on developer credentials from AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, Docker, npm, GitHub, and numerous other services. The malicious code executes during CommonJS module loading, forking a detached child process to perform credential harvesting while avoiding detection through obfuscation and DNS-based covert channels.

A supply chain attack targeting the Axios npm package has been identified after threat actors compromised the npm account of the company's lead developer. Malicious versions ([email protected] and [email protected]) were published containing a hidden dependency that executed postinstall scripts during npm installation. This automated execution downloaded and deployed a remote access trojan on affected systems without requiring user interaction, making it particularly dangerous for developer environments and CI/CD pipelines. The compromise resulted in full remote access capabilities, potential credential exposure including API keys and SSH keys, and possible insertion of malicious code into software builds. Detection platforms identified suspicious process execution chains involving npm spawning command interpreters and network utilities, followed by outbound connections to attacker-controlled infrastructure.
