These samples span five malware families including FunkSec ransomware and Oyster backdoor. Existing behavioral detection, cloud sandboxing, and endpoint analytics successfully detect and block all observed samples. The AI component primarily accelerates malware development rather than enabling evasion of defenses. Distribution patterns are opportunistic rather than targeted.

Fox Tempest is a financially motivated threat actor operating a malware-signing-as-a-service (MSaaS) business used by cybercriminals to distribute malicious code, including ransomware. The actor abuses Microsoft Artifact Signing to generate fraudulent code-signing certificates, allowing malware to evade security controls. Fox Tempest created over a thousand certificates and established hundreds of Azure tenants to support operations. Microsoft revoked over one thousand certificates and disrupted the service in May 2026 through the Digital Crimes Unit. The operation enabled ransomware deployment including Rhysida by threat actors like Vanilla Tempest, and distributed malware families including Oyster, Lumma Stealer, and Vidar. The MSaaS was available through signspace[.]cloud, charging between $5000-$9000 USD. Attacks impacted healthcare, education, government, and financial services sectors globally.

A new campaign is distributing the Oyster (Broomstick) backdoor through trojanized Microsoft Teams installers. Threat actors are using SEO poisoning and malvertising to trick users into downloading fake installers from spoofed websites. The malicious installers deploy a persistent backdoor that enables remote access, gathers system information, and supports additional payload delivery while evading detection. This tactic mirrors earlier fake PuTTY campaigns, showing a trend of abusing trusted software for initial access. The backdoor communicates with attacker-controlled C2 domains and uses DLL sideloading via rundll32.exe for stealthy execution. Organizations are advised to download software only from verified sources and avoid relying on search engine advertisements.
