During Q3 2026, attacks targeting poorly managed Linux SSH servers were observed, primarily using brute force and dictionary attacks. The main malware families involved were ShellBot, a Perl-based DDoS bot, and Fisieredoor, a backdoor capable of command execution and deploying SSH dictionary attack tools. Attackers used wget or curl to download malware, then installed user-mode rootkits, process masking tools (XHide), and XMRig cryptocurrency miners. The malware launcher used ld.so.preload to inject rootkits and disguised mining processes as legitimate bash sessions. Fisieredoor also deployed tools for credential harvesting and lateral movement, transmitting successful authentication data to command servers. A sophisticated multi-stage infection chain was discovered through analysis of a system exhibiting frequent PowerShell execution alerts. The attack leveraged multiple layers of obfuscation and concealment techniques, including Registry-based payload storage, DNS TXT record exploitation, and data hidden within image and WAV audio files. The threat actors employed various evasion methods such as security control tampering and in-memory execution to avoid detection. Rather than writing payloads directly to disk, attackers reconstructed malicious code from distributed sources including Registry entries and steganographically encoded data in media files. The ultimate objective of this elaborate infection chain was to deploy cryptocurrency mining operations covertly on compromised systems while maintaining persistent access through multiple redundant mechanisms. The TerminalFix campaign is a sophisticated multi-stage intrusion targeting organizations via compromised websites that display fake Cloudflare CAPTCHA overlays. Victims are tricked into executing malicious PowerShell commands that download and execute a signed legitimate binary alongside a malicious DLL for sideloading. This leads to steganographic payload extraction, extensive Active Directory reconnaissance, and deployment of a Python-based reverse-tunnel implant providing persistent network-level proxy access. The campaign enables attackers to pivot within the network, conduct domain enumeration, and maintain stealthy persistent access. Although no direct downstream actions were observed, the access gained could facilitate privilege escalation, data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment. The campaign combines advanced evasion techniques and persistent network access, posing a serious threat to enterprise environments. A DPRK-aligned threat group is targeting developers through fake job postings and coding challenges in a campaign tracked as REF9403. Attackers post fake job offers in developer forums, then send trojanized repositories containing fully functional e-commerce projects with malicious code hidden using steganography inside SVG flag images. When developers run these projects, the malware deploys four-stage payloads aligned with OTTERCOOKIE: a browser credential and cryptocurrency wallet stealer, a file exfiltration module, a Socket.IO-based remote access trojan, and a clipboard stealer. The campaign was discovered after targeting Elastic's community Slack workspace. Multiple trojanized repositories were found with zero antivirus detections at the time of discovery, demonstrating the sophistication of this supply chain attack vector against software developers. Between late April and mid-June 2026, Microsoft observed heightened ACR Stealer activity targeting enterprise environments through ClickFix social engineering lures. This information-stealing malware, associated with Amatera Stealer rebranding and offered as malware-as-a-service, deployed through two distinct campaigns. The first utilized WebDAV-delivered payloads with Python loaders and blockchain-based command-and-control resolution. The second employed a fileless approach using MSHTA and steganography-concealed payloads within images. Both campaigns harvested browser credentials, authentication tokens, and sensitive documents from compromised systems. Threat actors leveraged obfuscated PowerShell scripts, scheduled task persistence, and in-memory execution techniques to evade detection. Notable tactics included masquerading as legitimate software updates, utilizing Windows DPAPI for credential decryption, and targeting PDF and Microsoft 365 documents. The blockchain dead-drop technique enabled dynamic i... Join the discussion | AlienVault OTX General | 07/17/2026, 01:19:38 UTC Added: 07/18/2026, 08:55:18 UTC |
In March 2026, trojans represented 21% of attachment-based threats, while phishing attacks using fake pages dropped from 42% to 15% month-over-month. Script-based malware increased significantly, with HTML at 14% and JavaScript at 11%. Compressed files including ZIP (14%), RAR (8%), and 7Z (5%) were common distribution methods. Document-based threats utilized PDF (13%), XLS (5%), and DOCX (2%) files. Attackers impersonated courier services like FedEx and DHL, as well as financial institutions including Hana Bank and Woori Bank. Distribution methods included HTML scripts and PDF hyperlinks leading to credential-stealing pages. Notable malware families included RemcosRAT and AgentTesla, with command-and-control infrastructure utilizing Telegram API tokens and external mail servers for data exfiltration. A supply chain attack targeting Axios npm package versions 1.14.1 and 0.30.4 introduced a malicious transitive dependency ([email protected]) that executed during installation. The attack deploys cross-platform payloads across Linux, Windows, and macOS through a consistent pattern: Node.js spawns OS-native shells to retrieve and execute remote payloads in detached or hidden contexts. Linux victims receive a Python-based RAT, Windows systems get a PowerShell backdoor with registry persistence, and macOS hosts are compromised with a Mach-O binary backdoor. All variants beacon to the same C2 infrastructure, performing host fingerprinting, process enumeration, filesystem reconnaissance, and arbitrary code execution. The malicious activity is reliably detected through behavioral signatures focusing on unusual Node.js process ancestry and remote payload retrieval rather than static indicators. TeamPCP uploaded malicious versions of the telnyx Python SDK to PyPI, compromising a package with 750,000 monthly downloads. The attack uses a three-stage architecture: a trojanized package triggers a platform-specific loader, which downloads a second-stage payload hidden in a WAV file using steganography, deploying a credential harvester. The harvester steals various credentials, encrypts them, and exfiltrates to the attacker's C2. The attack works across major operating systems and spreads through Kubernetes clusters. This is part of a broader TeamPCP supply chain campaign that has targeted multiple packages over nine days. The sophisticated attack includes WAV and PNG steganography, hybrid encryption, Kubernetes lateral movement, and a full-featured RAT on Windows with advanced evasion techniques. A multi-stage malware delivery campaign was uncovered, initially detected through a suspicious VBS file. The investigation revealed a complex attack infrastructure using Unicode obfuscation, PNG-based payload staging, and reflectively loaded .NET execution. The attacker utilized open directories to host multiple obfuscated VBS files, each mapping to different malware payloads including XWorm and Remcos RAT. A secondary infection vector involving a weaponized 'PDF' and batch script was also discovered. The campaign demonstrated a modular approach, allowing for payload rotation and multiple attack vectors from the same domain. This sophisticated infrastructure design enables rapid modification and expansion of available payloads without altering the initial delivery mechanism. A sophisticated keylogger campaign has been discovered, utilizing spear-phishing emails with attachments containing hidden malware. The campaign targets multiple countries, employing various packaging styles and execution methods. The malware, known as VIP_Keylogger, is delivered using steganography and process hollowing techniques. It focuses on stealing sensitive information from browsers, email clients, and other applications. The keylogger captures browser data, decrypts passwords, and exfiltrates information through multiple channels, including email. While some features appear disabled, the malware demonstrates advanced capabilities in data theft and evasion techniques.
