In July 2026, IIJ discovered and analyzed an unknown .NET-based malicious tool hosted on a public directory. This tool, named PIVOTPIPE, exhibits functionality similar to Cobalt Strike Beacon, communicating with C2 servers using configurations close to default profiles and supporting numerous C2 commands. However, PIVOTPIPE differs from official Cobalt Strike Beacon through unique implementations including detection evasion code, custom loaders, and obfuscated strings. The tool consists of two components: a loader and RAT module. The loader implements AMSI bypass, indirect syscalls, and sleep masking for EDR evasion. PIVOTPIPE supports TCP Beacon and SMB Beacon functionality for peer-to-peer communication through compromised hosts. Debug artifacts suggest the tool was still under development at the time of discovery, indicating potential future enhancements.

A path traversal vulnerability affecting the Windows version of WinRAR allows the attackers to execute arbitrary code by crafting malicious archive files. This vulnerability was exploited in the wild and was discovered by Anton Cherepanov, Peter Košinár, and Peter Strýček from ESET.

The Gentlemen ransomware group, which emerged in July 2025, employed a zero-day vulnerability in a bring-your-own-vulnerable-driver (BYOVD) attack to disable endpoint detection and response systems. During an incident investigated in early April, the group leveraged an obscure third-party driver named ktapi.sys from Kontron to bypass security protections. The sophisticated exploit chains multiple advanced techniques to navigate Windows exploit mitigations, including bypassing Supervisor Mode Access Prevention and Supervisor Mode Execution Prevention. The toolkit enables the attackers to call privileged kernel mode functions from user mode processes, ultimately terminating EDR processes including Windows Defender, ESET, Palo Alto Cortex XDR, and SentinelOne. The vulnerability had no prior public documentation and was previously absent from vulnerable driver blocklists.

Since late 2025, cybercriminals have been exploiting Wallpaper Engine, a popular live wallpaper application on Steam, to distribute malware through Steam Workshop. Attackers target primarily Chinese and Russian gamers by embedding malicious code within application wallpapers shared on the platform. These compromised wallpapers deliver various malware types including infostealers, backdoors, crypto miners, and ransomware. One analyzed sample dropped DarkKomet backdoor while hijacking Steam sessions to steal account credentials. The malware modifies system libraries to locate Steam installations and exfiltrate data to attacker-controlled servers. Compromised accounts are then used to upload additional malicious wallpapers. The diverse malware families suggest multiple independent hacking groups are exploiting this distribution method. Infected wallpapers received thousands of downloads before removal, with 89% of infections occurring in China.

Beginning in late September 2025, multiple affected hosts were observed making requests to domains impersonating content delivery networks (CDNs), including infrastructure masquerading as Yahoo- and Apple-affiliated services. Across these cases, Darktrace identified a consistent behavioral execution pattern: the retrieval of legitimate binaries alongside malicious Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs), enabling sideloading and execution of a modular .NET-based Remote Access Trojan (RAT) framework.

The Harvester APT group has developed a highly-evasive Linux version of its GoGra backdoor that leverages Microsoft Graph API and Outlook mailboxes as a covert command-and-control channel to bypass traditional network defenses. Initial VirusTotal submissions originated from India and Afghanistan, indicating these regions as primary targets. The attackers use social engineering with tailored decoy documents masquerading as legitimate files, including references to Indian food delivery services. The backdoor uses hardcoded Azure AD credentials to poll mailboxes every two seconds, executing commands received via email and exfiltrating results back to operators. Analysis confirms this Linux variant shares nearly identical code with a previously known Windows version, including matching spelling errors, demonstrating the group's multi-platform development strategy and continued expansion of capabilities targeting South Asia for espionage purposes.

RedSun.exe is a publicly available proof-of-concept exploit targeting a zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft Defender on Windows systems. It enables local privilege escalation from a standard user to SYSTEM-level access by exploiting flawed Defender remediation logic for cloud-tagged malicious files and redirecting high-privilege file operations to overwrite protected system locations such as C:\Windows\System32. This allows arbitrary code execution as SYSTEM without needing administrator privileges or kernel exploits. The exploit is reliable, actively weaponized, and potentially unpatched in some environments, posing a significant risk for persistence, lateral movement, and defense evasion. No official patch or remediation guidance is currently available. Organizations should enforce least privilege principles and deploy behavior-based detection focused on suspicious Defender-related file operations and privilege escalation attempts. Monitoring for filesystem manipulation targeting protected system directories is also recommended. Rapid patching should be applied once vendor updates are released.

APT37 conducted a sophisticated social engineering campaign utilizing Facebook accounts claiming locations in Pyongyang and Pyongsong, North Korea, to conduct reconnaissance and build trust with targets. After establishing relationships through Facebook Messenger, the threat actor migrated conversations to Telegram and employed pretexting tactics, claiming to share encrypted PDF documents containing military weapons information. Victims were persuaded to install a tampered Wondershare PDFelement installer that executed embedded shellcode for initial compromise. The attack chain delivered follow-on commands through a JPG-disguised payload hosted on a compromised Japanese real estate website. The malware abused Zoho WorkDrive OAuth2 APIs as C2 channels, exfiltrating screenshots, documents, system information, and audio files. The campaign employed multiple evasion techniques including code cave injection, process hollowing into legitimate dism.exe, XOR encryption layers, and fileless in-memory execution.

Elastic Security Labs analyzes VoidLink, a sophisticated Linux malware framework combining Loadable Kernel Modules (LKMs) and eBPF for persistence. The rootkit, developed by a Chinese-speaking threat actor, evolved through four generations, targeting kernels from CentOS 7 to Ubuntu 22.04. VoidLink employs advanced techniques like delayed initialization, runtime key rotation, and a hybrid LKM-eBPF architecture for comprehensive stealth. Notable features include an ICMP-based covert channel, process protection, and memfd-aware boot loading. Evidence suggests AI-assisted development, lowering the barrier for kernel-level rootkit creation. Detection strategies and defensive recommendations are provided to counter this emerging threat.

A new supply chain attack targeting Trivy has compromised 75 out of 76 version tags in the aquasecurity/trivy-action GitHub repository. The attacker force-pushed these tags to serve malicious payloads, effectively turning trusted version references into a distribution mechanism for an infostealer. The malicious code executes within GitHub Actions runners, targeting sensitive data in CI/CD environments. It harvests secrets from runner process memory and the filesystem, encrypts the collected data, and exfiltrates it to an attacker-controlled endpoint or a fallback GitHub-based channel. The attack's scope is significant, potentially affecting over 10,000 workflow files on GitHub referencing this action.
