A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's crypto QAT driver (intel_qat and device-specific qat_4xxx) can cause kernel crashes when the device-specific driver is repeatedly loaded and unloaded in a tight loop. This occurs because a deferred workqueue routine may execute after the driver is unloaded, dereferencing freed memory. The issue has been assigned CVE-2025-39721 and affects multiple Linux kernel versions. A patch is available to fix this flaw.

CVE-2025-39721 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's crypto acceleration framework, specifically involving the QAT driver. When a device-specific QAT driver (e.g., qat_4xxx.ko) is repeatedly loaded and unloaded rapidly, a power management interrupt can trigger just before unloading the device-specific driver while the core intel_qat.ko driver remains loaded. Since the driver uses a shared workqueue (qat_misc_wq) owned by the core driver, deferred routines from the unloaded device-specific driver may still execute, leading to dereferencing freed memory and causing a kernel crash (page fault). This vulnerability has been resolved with patches available in updated Linux kernel versions.
